The humpback whale photographs are the result of 103 whale watches and lots of film and patience. Each visit with the whales is special, but every trip does not always produce the photographs you will see here. We visit the whales on their own terms, and over time we are rewarded with a glimpse into their very extraordinary lives.
My passion for humpback whales brought with it an interest in the fishing port of Gloucester, Massachusetts. Gloucester is an ideal stepping stone for a trip to Stellwagen Bank which offers some of the most spectacular whale watching in the world. On my trips to and from Stellwagen I began to turn my camera toward Gloucester Harbor with its fishing boats and lighthouses. Included on this page are some photographs related to Sebastian Junger's book "The Perfect Storm", most notably some photos of a swordfishing vessel, the "Hannah Boden", and her former captain Linda Greenlaw.
My Walden Pond page was inspired by my annual visits to the pond in Concord, Massachusetts. Its most famous resident, Henry David Thoreau, lived in a cabin by the pond from 1845 to 1847. Along with my photographs I have added appropriate Thoreau quotations from his best known work "Walden", published in 1854.
I have been visiting the White Mountains of New Hampshire for the past twenty years. More physical effort went into capturing my White Mountain photographs than any others. Steep climbs, heavy packs, but worth every step.
The wolf photographs evolved from my experiences with captive wolves. The photographs on page 1 were taken at the Sharon Audubon Center in Sharon, Connecticut. I was a volunteer there and had the rare opportunity to actually sit with the wolves in their enclosure. The photographs on page 2 come from my annual visits to Wolf Hollow in Ipswich, Massachusetts. On page 3 are photographs from the Wolf Conservation Center in South Salem, New York.
Astronomy has been an interest of mine for many years. Just as whale photography requires patience, so too does photographing the heavens. Many cold evenings were spent at the telescope with numb fingers trying to change rolls of film, but I think the resulting photographs were worth it. Several photos of Comet Hale-Bopp are included on this page.
This page features photographs I've taken at various road races in New England and New York in the 1970's and 80's. Included are photos from several Boston Marathons and the 1984 Men's Olympic Trials Marathon in Buffalo, NY.
