I began photographing whales in 1986. Since that time I've been on 103 whale watches. Most of these photos were taken over an area called Stellwagen Bank, an undersea sandy plateau stretching for 26 miles between Cape Cod and Cape Ann, Massachusetts. I do most of my whale watching out of Gloucester, Massachusetts because of its proximity to Stellwagen. A few of the photographs were taken on Jeffreys Ledge, a feeding area to the north of Stellwagen. The humpbacks of Stellwagen Bank are one of the most studied whale populations in the world. Many of them have been given names based on their tail markings to more easily identify them in the field. I've placed individual whale's names in quotes underneath the photos. The file size of all the photographs has been greatly reduced for faster webpage loading. The original files show much finer detail and it is from these original files that your photograph will be printed. For information on purchasing photographs click here. ![]() |
